Guarana Paullinia cupana is a climbing plant in the Sapindaceae family that may grow up to 10 metres. Native to Brazil and Uruguay, this plant is widely found on the banks of the Amazon River. It is extensively grown in Northern Brazil.
Its seeds are commonly used. Guarana seeds contain caffeine, trace amounts of theophylline and theobromine, catechin tannins, saponin glycosides, choline, resin, mucilage, pigments and starch.
Guarana seeds have the following properties:
